Fat and Diet:

Some patients with small-bowel Crohn's disease may need to reduce the amount of fat in their diet. Patients may notice fat absorption is very likely to be decreased and diarrhea may occur or be further aggravated. Both the decrease of fat and increased diarrhea will result in a loss of energy intake.

If you are on a low-fat diet, can maintain an acceptable weight, and are not bothered by the fat restriction, there is nothing you need to do. However, some patients feel they need to gain weight, or would like to use fat for salad dressing or cooking. A manufactured food product called MCT for medium-chain triglyceride can be used. MCT oil can be used like any liquid medication, mixed with fruit juices, used on salads or vegetables, used in sauces, or cooking and baking. The powder form of MCT must be mixed with water prior to use.

See your doctor before making any significant modifications to your diet.
